Deeply concerned over the disturbing news coverage on child safety, a group of students from Satya Bharti School, Kurrian Kalan in Uttar Pradesh took it upon themselves to create a safer environment for children in their community. The students soon realized that community members were highly unaware of the protocols to follow upon being attacked;most children did not even know they are being taken advantage of due to lack of knowledge. Upon learning this, the students of Satya Bharti School decided that their campaign would be centered around creating awareness on safety of children from unsolicited advances.
The students’ campaign was three-fold. The first part of the campaign consisted of training community members including school and college students, their parentsandthe local police on the proper protocols involved. The second part included working with the Gram Pradhan to open a Child Safety Center in the village. The third part involved providing information on child care helplines around the village, to enable each community member to reach the helpline if need be. Each leg of the campaign was successfully carried out by the students with parents, especially mothers, playing a big part in educating their children on the matter. As a result of the training programme, several schools set up new CCTV cameras in their school class-rooms instead of only on the main gates.
During this campaign,the students were able to orient and bring awareness among over a hundred community members. They plan to also continue their sincere efforts in ensuring the safety of children at all times.
